These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

Release Date: Out now!

Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Pages: 384pgs

The Story

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

The Review

A big thanks to the publisher for providing me a review copy of this book!

While THESE BROKEN STARS fell short of my expectations - mostly due to that fact that it wasn't the type of read I thought it would be like, but for the most part I still thought it was a decent sci-fi read and one that I think many would enjoy as well.

So here's the thing: I loved the concept. It's almost like a Titanic ship only in space and I think that was a pretty rad idea indeed. But I guess what fell short in my expectations part was the story itself (which was not really what I expected cause I thought we would have more time on the ship or at least a few more chapters about it) but apart from that, I think the major problem for me was the characters themselves and how they all turned out in the end, especially with our two main characters, Lilac and Tarver, whom were the only characters we could learn more and more about.

Did I like Lilac and Tarver? Well they have funny names, but yeah, I sort of liked them as characters. Tarver mostly . . . had got my full attention. However, since Lilac got on my nerves and then when the whole romance erupts and becomes something more . . . I just couldn't feel the chemistry between the two characters - whatsoever in fact - and that's a problem in my books cause the romance was pretty, mostly, partly what the book is all about and yeah . . . I wasn't sold on it unfortunately. But props to Tarver, whom was my only favourite character in the book and to the authors themselves for writing their little twists and turns in the book because some certainly had caught me by surprise at times.

Overall, THESE BROKEN STARS is the type of book that will definitely - or somewhat - please Beth Revis's Across the Universe fans or any sci-fi fan for that matter. While I may not have been sold on the romance part of the book, but in the end it was a nice little read.

The Rating
2/5 stars
